Good Techniques Essay.

Liphahlee Marshall

Digital Photography

December 16, 2010

There are many techniques people use for photography. Many find some techniques easier then others or more difficult then some, but either way all the techniques makes taking images less complicated and easier. There are three main techniques that I think are very useful and helpful when taking images.

One technique that I think is very useful when taking photographs is The Rules of Thirds. The basic principle behind the rules of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds. By doing this you are able to focus on the main details in your image. This is important because not everything in your image is necessarily important. So to focus on the most essential things make things less complicated. Using the place of interest can be very helpful too. There’s a theory that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more. This theory seems to be true because when doing this your photo seems more together and organized. You should always go for the intersection points most naturally rather then the center of the shot because you can gather more details by doing that. When using the rules of thirds, you should always ask yourself important questions. Like what are the points of interest in this shot? And where am I intentionally placing them? This just helps you prepare to take a good photo.

Next, another good technique that can be used that is very helpful is Finding fresh angles to shoot from. It is very important to change the angle you’re shooting from sometimes because it impacts the size of your subject. Sometimes there are some things that you may or may not want to include in your photo. The variety of perspectives that you can shoot images from is only limited by your imagination. Just try imagining what you want to be there or what you want be around when taking a photo and you’ll be just fine. Also changing the angle you’re shooting from has a real effect upon the light, shade and patterns on it. Take an image at a good location where there isn’t too much light getting in the way and your angle and image will be perfectly fine.

Furthermore, I have one more method that is good to use, which is Getting Backgrounds Right. Backgrounds present both opportunities and challenges to photographers because they can sometimes overwhelm subjects and distract from them. But at the same time they can but a subject in context and make it stand out in a way that highlights it wonderfully. Taking images can be a difficult thing at times. There are many problems that can occur at times. A common one is distracting focal points. This is when your ready to take an image and something or someone pops up out of nowhere at the last minute. To avoid this just simply scan your background before taking a picture. Another problem that comes up sometimes is protruding elements from subject’s heads. This happens when the background element look like its sticking up out of a person’s head. This can cause confusion sometimes and can throw the composition of a shot off. So to prevent this from happening, simply be aware of what’s in you’re background when preparing to take an image. By doig this, problems shouldn’t really occur when taking images.

In addition, taking good images is always an important thing and using techniques to help you take good images is always an important thing as well. I hope the techniques that was described makes it easier for you to take photographs and images. They’re very useful and will definitely come in handy!
